Week 3: Midway mark
Wow how time flies! Just when I was getting used to this too. This week, I helped out with the usual classes and tried teaching a little more. I also finally managed to remember all the students' names of my CT's mentor(form) class.
On Wednesday, the Year 4s and 5s were having their sports day and hence, a lot of teachers were absent since they were helping out at the event. As a result, my CT and I had to sub for a few classes. We got the PE classes, two of them, and got the students to play football and frisbee. The students seem to enjoy having us participate in their games as well. During last period, my CT had the mentor class (Year 6) write letters to themselves. Something like a time capsule, the letters will be returned to them when they finish Year 9, three years from now. Some of them couldn't think of what to write while others got creative by drawing pictures as shown on the right. I like the idea of this reminder to themselves, to note how far they will go in three years and see how much they've changed.
Thursday was sports day where students headed off to a nearby stadium to try their hand at different stations. I helped out with recording the results and corralling students together during each event, and got to see shot-put and ball toss done which was new to me. I also spent the entire day memorising everyone's names for recording of results. It was a lot of fun though I think the students did not take well to the hot day and some tired themselves out by the 4th station (there were 5 total).
My CT was off on Friday and so I was assigned to a Year 4 teacher and got to see 10-year-olds at work for their project on drawing maps using different lines (e.g. parallel, perpendicular, intersecting). I also assisted with revising with the Year 5s how to calculate perimeter and area and volume for their dream room project which they are to finish by this week. On the right is one such completed dreamroom of one of our students.
On Saturday, we went out to explore a nearby island as recommended by one of the teachers. We had lots of fun at the rocky beach and tried dipping our toes into the frigid water (Extremely frigid I might add). It's a wonder how the natives here can swim in such temperature but there lies the differences between what we are used to, I suppose. We also took lots of pictures which I believe my fellow IP mates will upload (look forward to them). Here's one from me as well!
Signing off!
